Why building in Earth and Timber?

Timber is a renewable raw material that absorbs CO₂ while growing in the forest. This CO₂, removed from the atmosphere, remains stored in the timber throughout the lifetime of a building. Earth, often available as excavated soil, is typically disposed of in landfills during most construction projects. Yet it can also be processed into rammed earth and used as a building material. In the event of deconstruction, these natural materials can be reused or returned to nature. Since both earth and timber generate only minimal emissions, they are an ideal choice for truly sustainable building projects.

Through its open porosity, earth naturally regulates indoor humidity and creates a pleasant indoor climate. Owing to its mass, earth contributes to the building’s thermal inertia and, together with natural night cooling, enhances summer heat protection. This dual capacity for regulating both humidity and temperature results in an energy-efficient building with minimal necessary technical input. In addition, the mass of the earth provides effective sound insulation.

Earth and timber complement each other structurally in an ideal way: timber is lightweight and able to absorb both tensile and compressive forces, while earth contributes mass and fire safety to the building. The fire resistance of earth protects the timber from charring, allowing for efficient sizing of the timber components.

Combining earth with timber enables precise, weather-independent prefabrication. Elements can be manufactured under ideal conditions and quickly assembled on site. This results in short construction phases and high execution quality, even for large-scale projects.

Earth and timber are ideal building materials for projects that place the highest demands on ecology, quality, indoor climate, and aesthetics. The heritage of traditional building methods can, with experience and expertise, be carried forward into contemporary architecture: a strong response to the challenges of tomorrow’s construction.
